Western Europe
Food Guide
Food and culture are closely intertwined, while traveling one of my favorite hobbies is eating food from different places. Food can tell you the stories behind people and their history.
Below are photographs and descriptions of food from different countries in Western Europe. Some of the pictures are the national dish while others are common fare.
Pie and Mash | London, England
Fluffy and hardy pie was very filling lightly baked on the outside with vegetables and steak on the inside.
Curry | London, England
Vegan Curry with mixed vegetables, noodles, and coconut milk sauce. I added extra spices, but the dish is already very flavorful.
Dutch Waffel | Amsterdam, Netherlands
Super sweet Dutch Waffle with delicious Nutella on top
Herring Sandwich | Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Dutch national dish has Herring with pickles and onions on a bun. Tastes like a cold meat sandwich and it’s a simple recipe.
Belgium Waffle | Brussels, Belgium
Sweet Belgium waffle, you can add whatever toping suites you. The locals just eat the waffle with a little sugar on top. Tourist typically go all out with whip cream, strawberries and other toppings, which could be seen as offensive.
Crepe | Paris, France
Thin pancake with toppings in the inside. Most people think of dessert crepes, but the one pictured is an open face savory crepe with chicken mushroom and crème sauce.
Croissant & Baguette| Montpellier, France
France is known for its selections of fresh breads. It can be picked up at the local market, adding cheese or tomatoes to add more flavor.
Pallea | Barcelona, Spain ( Catalan Cuisine)
Rice dish mixed with vegetables and seafood. You can get it with other meats or just vegetables if you want. Paella is very rich in flavor with a host of herbs and seasonings in dish.
Tapas | Barcelona, Spain
Tapas translates to a small portion appetizer or snack. The must tries in Barcelona:
La Bomba
Papas bravas: potatoes with a special spicy aioli, quite similar to mayonnaise. It is traditionally made with garlic, olive oil, and salt.
